Allen Hayes writes: " Garnet Pavatea leaped the the first rank of Hopi potters in the mid-20th-century.  She made traditional Sikyatki Revival pieces on yellow clay, both in polychrome and in black on yellow, like this ladle, a traditional Hopi pottery form she especially liked.  She also became noted for polished redware decorated with a punctate* design created, according to legend, with an old-style beer can opener."

*punctate: marked with points or dots; having minute spots or depressions
